A paradise in the Austrian state of Salzburg, Zell am See is located along the shores of the Zell Lake and surrounded by mountains like the 2000-metre high Schmittenhöhe. It is an important ski centre in the winter and a hiking and mountain-biking paradise during summer.
The area has been occupied since Roman times, but the village was founded around the year 740 by the order of Bishop Johannes I of Salzburg. The picturesque Old Town includes typical Alpine style buildings, as well as the oldest building of the region, St. Hippolyte's Church. The Austrian area of Zell am See offers a wide range of hotels, B&B’s, apartments, and guest houses.
The leisure centre has a covered pool, a sauna and steam bath, and special facilities for kids. Zell am See is a gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest of the Alps and Austria’s oldest.
The nearby town of Kaprun is home to the 12th-century Kaprun Castle and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Salzburg Airport is 100 km away, while Sixt Innsbruck Airport is 150 km away. Such a beautiful lake!
Such a beautiful lake! We went in off season, so we could not take the boat for a tour, but we loved it anyway. The views of the mountains and hillside home across the lake were so pretty! We would love to spend time here in the summer. I'm sure it's beautiful and fun in the winter, but we don't like the cold so much!

Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train.
Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train. We stayed for one night before our journey across the alps to Zurich. If you don't ski, there is little to do in town when it's cold outside besides a stroll along the beautiful lake and a visit to shops and restaurants. One 24-hour period was enough for us to see and do everything. The location of the train station made this a very easy place to visit.

Zell am See didn't have the quaint alps village feel at all, more like a regular large town, the high street was very disappointing.
The scenery of the lake and mountains was breath taking. Simply beautiful.
Snow for skiing in Feb 24 was absolutely awful given the low altitude! A lot of mud patches on the lower runs rendering them unusable. I would consider elsewhere for skiing option tbh. The ski resort was small and good for beginners/families primarily.
I felt very safe walking around the town.

We loved Zell am See.
We loved Zell am See. From the ease of getting here (the train from Salzburg is clean, quick and on time), to the scenery, beautiful town and great people. Everyone was pleasant to deal with, the facilities are excellent (although watch out for the supermarkets closing early compared to the UK) and the skiing is brilliant. Lift queues were generally short. However, as expected, everything is expensive!

What I like the most: Friendly staff, free use of washing machine and dryer at the lobby, underground garage, spacious living room and fully equipped kitchen, near the lake for a leisure walk and near to town and near to a lot of ski lifts and cable car to Schmittenhöhe
What I don like: nothing. Just be sure not to have a late check in so that you can seek for help before the reception close

Zell am See is truly beautiful.
Zell am See is truly beautiful. We had an amazing week of skiing with an excellent ski guide (Thomas Hager, https://www.alpin-guide.com/eng/), who added so much to our ski holiday experience. The town of Zell am See has an array of great restaurants, bars and shops. We travelled over the Christmas period and the place was festive with lots of Christmas spirit in the air! We would highly recommend a trip to Zell am See.
The apartment was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING design wise, layout wise, etc. and quiet; the whole building only include about 9 apartments which is nice. There was even one more bathroom than we had expected. Heated floors. Great ski room. It only took 3-4 min. to walk to the City Express ski lift (200m?) and it was 400m. from Billa and a cute area with shops, restaurants, etc. (not large, but nice to walk around with the kids).
Wonderful small hotel in a beautiful location
Breakfast buffet exceeded our expectations
Very friendly owners and staff
The decoration of the rooms and the rest of the hotel breathes cosiness and attention for detail. Free parking
The pre check-in because it saves time
The view
And last but not least the location, half way between the center of Zell am See and the lower station of the Schmittenhöhebahn
Everything was second-to-none!
I was pleased to be back to St Georg for the 4th time. The staff is as welcome as always, they are ready to help and give tips 24/7.
I especially like the traditional Austrian style of the hotel - super cozy, authentic and very tranquil. Spa was well upgraded, I do recommend popping in there after an intense day of hiking/skiing.
We absolutely loved our stay at Romantik Hotel. Everything was fabulous… the staff, breakfast, dinner, room, wellness spa and location. A real highlight of our trip.
We hiked in the beautiful mountains during the day, relaxed in the spa in the afternoon and had dinner in the restaurant each night, eating wonderful Austrian dishes.
It was my first stay at Hotel Gruner Baum ....I have been in Zell am See many times before but never had a chance to book my stay here. It was a great choice and I really enjoyed it.
Perfect location in heart of Zell am See. Really great breakfast and dinner. Close to ski resorts....
The best location of the hotel is directly on the lake with its own beach. The view from the window to the lake is amazing. Immediately extended the stay in the hotel to stay here for one more day. Delicious breakfasts and dinners in a restaurant with a view. Very kind receptionist.
An old but cosy hotel in the middle of Zell am See. The bunk bed for the kids looked nice and was very comfy. The mattresses in other beds were very good. The room was very clean, breakfast very good. The hotel is located within walking distance to the City Express ski lift.
Lake view from room and breakfast area was beautiful. Room was very clean with comfortable beds. Room had plenty of space. A short drive to ski slopes. Free parking on mountain. Lots of restaurants. The pedestrian walk/shopping area in Zell am See was enjoyable.
the staff were super friendly and nice.
there was a bidet water sprayer which is not always available in Europe hotels/apartments.
the apartment is super clean and specious and bed is comfortable.
breakfast was acceptable, more selection will be great.
Great place in the city center of Zell am See, the apartament was very spacious, beds were comfortable and there were all necessary fittings for a stay. It was nice and clean. Wellnes center both in the hotel and in the sister center were nice.
Obviously a great view on the lake with many options of exploration should you stay longer, rooms are modern (like new apartments that people build to live in), award winning cuisine. Super friendly personnel.
Special thanks to the owner for his kindness and the staff 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Best place to stay in Zell am See, very luxurious and the view on this hotel will take your visit to Zell am See another level 😍😍.
