From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

A vibrant city. my first time there and was pleasantly surprised. Sea front is amazing, docks are hustling and bustling. Good food options, lots of cafes and restaurants and for travel in the region, Plymouth is an ideal base.

Very little parking in the centre.
Very little parking in the centre. Plymouth is quite hilly for those with limited mobility. The little Barbican Theatre is great. Centre can get a bit lairy after Plymouth Argyle have played at home.

Plymouth Hoe is a wonderful place to walk plenty of history.to indulge in. The barbican is a short walk from the Hoe where you will find restaurants and pubs. I would avoid the city centre until after the improvements are finished.

The city centre itself isn't very beautiful.
The city centre itself isn't very beautiful. However, the city part near the old harbour is quite nice. And Plymouth serves very well as a starting point for trips to adjacent cities and towns in Devon and Cornwall. There are very good bus and train connections, even outside the touristic season. The landscapes in Devon and Cornwall are quite beautiful indeed, with gently rolling hills and marvellous seasights!

Really interesting place full of history.
Really interesting place full of history.
Everywhere was clean and so many different paths and steps allowing access to the sea shore and old buildings.
Huge amount of restaurants covering all types of food for every taste.
Views were amazing and so close to many nature areas.
Many ferries travelling all over the coast to islands, historic docks and secluded beaches.
Only downside for small children would be the lack of a sandy beech.

The older town area where we stayed is lovely & near to the iconic Hoe & Barbican.
Sadly the town of my youth is soul less due to so much "concrete", however work is proceeding to revamp the old boulevards with paving, seating & flower beds so in the coming months it will be far better.
Like all towns some of the larger department store buildings & banks are no longer and stand empty - once they are redeveloped it will be much better
Very easy to get around walking, no need to use public transport for shops, hoe & barbican
I received a warm welcome at this family-run hotel in a superb location just minutes away from Plymouth Hoe. My room was very clean and comfortable. There is a wide breakfast choice served by a friendly and efficient waitress in a light and airy room- no windowless basement breakfast room here as I have encountered elsewhere! I will be making several trips to Plymouth and it took me a while to find the right place to stay. I am happy to have finally found the Invicta as it meets all my needs.
We were met with a very kind host who went above and beyond to make our stay as pleasant and wonderful as it was. Our room was clean, the food was delicious, and we even were made a little breakfast to-go as we had to check out super early to catch our bus. The location is perfect, as you literally walk up the street and are at the ocean or with a couple of steps in the city center! If I ever were to come back to Plymouth, I would stay here again, no doubt!
This is a lovely bed and breakfast. Paul, the owner, was very attentive to the needs of his guests. Room was beautiful and comfortable. Breakfast had wonderful options and the breakfast room was very pleasant. Location was safe and walking distance to all the sites, but also quiet and secluded enough to not feel like you're in the middle of a tourist location.
The whole inn has such nice decorations of Plymouth. I highly recommend booking here.
Lovely old Victorian hotel, would recommend staying here if visiting Plymouth as it is in walking distance of the Historic dockyards, Plymouth Hoe and the City Centre. Parking is limited at the back of the hotel, but we managed to park there. There is a small charge to park, plenty of other parking on the side roads, Get the Ringo app which makes it easier to pay for parking in Plymouth
Very clean and comfortable. Hotel has new owners that have spent a small fortune on renovation, so spectacularly shiny and new!
Good rates and very close to all amenities, 15 minute walk to main promanard, from there you can enjoy fabulous views.
The room was comfy, just beware of noisy seagulls!!
Staff were superb, the hotel had changed hands and all the staff were clearly the right people to make it succeed !
Parking was a massive bonus, and was free, any street parking in the area is restricted or has charges and restricted hours.
Position was really good for all Plymouth's best things
What a gem! How did I not know about this place! Found this when I couldn't get in to a well known chain hotel in Plymouth and this was £30 cheaper. Thank Goodness! Beautiful setting in amazing grounds. Lovely meal and great breakfast. Really beautiful room. Very friendly staff.
Every single thing is great. The breakfast is the best breakfast I have ever had in Plymouth. The breakfast room is at the top of the hotel.. Stunning to see the sun up and our table is stunning to see the sea! The staff were all so helpful and happy.
Spa facilities were excellent and well looked after. Flexibility of dining times at breakfast was good. However, we were their in February and the hotel was not fully booked which made it easier.
Everything .Well run establishment. The best hotel I have stayed in . If I am back in Plymouth I will certainly book into this hotel Spacious rooms with all facilities and more. EXCELLENT BREAKFAST
Location close to a few very nice parks and easy to find. We were here for our daughters graduation from Plymouth University east drive. VERY CLEAN! spacious and modern
