Keppels Head Hotel, hotel in Portsmouth

This historic hotel, built in 1779, has free parking and an excellent location about 200 metres from Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth Harbour Rail Station, Gunwharf Quays and Spinnaker...

Fantastic location. Nice breakfast but not a ton of options. The view from the room was great, featuring the spinnaker tower at night and the harbour. The room was very spacious.

The Red Lion by Innkeeper's Collection, hotel in Portsmouth

Just 4 minutes’ walk from Cosham town centre, the The Red Lion by Innkeeper's Collection offers en suite rooms alongside its bar and pizza kitchen.

The full English breakfast (for the non-vegetarian). The efficient service for a table of 18 with a minimum of fuss. A free 70th birthday cake, even though it was for an 80-year-old....which prompted an 85-years reprise several days later, all in good humour. Easy access to shops (not just Tesco, but a bewildering array of tattoo parlours, nail bars, barber shops, off-licences and bingo halls), as well as public transport.

CarterCo Rooms, hotel in Portsmouth

Located in Portsmouth and with Southsea Common Beach reachable within 1 km, CarterCo Rooms provides a restaurant, non-smoking rooms, free WiFi and a bar.

It’s modern and the facilities are clean and well looked after. The keyless entry is a real plus so you don’t have an extra thing to carry around with you. Was privileged enough to meet the owner who was particularly hospitable and even helped us out with parking overnight. The bar downstairs was fantastic and made for a very nice afternoon in the outside area

FAQ about beach hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

My accommodation, booked and paid for, was a complete disaster. It no longer even existed. Don’t get caught out, and don’t believe anything you see about staying at ‘Zoom’, it is a lie. I was thankful to get a room at Travelodge in Portsmouth instead, but all this after a long day’s travel by train from up north. Travelodge felt like heaven! Portsmouth was fine, but tainted by my bad experience.

The coastal area is nice to walk along.

The coastal area is nice to walk along. The Mary Rose & Victory Museum are very good. Portsmouth city centre is dull, lacking greenery or planters, many shops are empty. It is not an attractive city centre! There is a statue of Charles Dickens in the Guildsquare otherwise the area is grim.

I'm a budget traveller so I don't need luxurious accommodation..around £50-60 per night is OK...if you're wanting to go into the city lots of buses available....you can change in the city for a bus to gunwharf....I did mention a kettle and tea/ coffee making facilities would be nice....if you want a big breakfast tesco is 2 minutes walk.....I would recommend this hotel for price and convenience

    The attraction was the harbour.

The attraction was the harbour. The ticket was expensive but well worth it. The Mary Rose Museum was phenomenally good - exciting, imaginitive and caught the attention of grandparents, parents and children alike. The Victory was almost equally good and the guides there were exceptional. We also visited the Warrior where the guide took over explaining to the children, told us an immense amount but also had us all in fits of laughter. Strongly recommended for all ages We also very much enjoyed Portchester castle and the exhibition on the prison there (and the cafe in the church.

Lovely, bright and quiet room with pillowed window nook and (partial) view of HMS Warrior, funky glass-fronted drawers and spacious bathroom. Airy breakfast room with hot and cold options. Friendly staff. Overall, a very nice independent hotel with character at a reasonable price. It's located just steps from the Portsmouth Harbour rail station (though with no train noise, at least in my room) and in the heart of Portsmouth Harbour, minutes away from both the historic harbour area and Gunwharf Quays for food and shopping.

The location was fantastic, only 5 minutes walk to the beach and even closer to the restaurants, plus only a 9-minute drive to Portsmouth Old Harbour. Despite that, the room was quiet and calming, and the bed is comfortable You could have a really good night's sleep. The owners understand what families need! There is a clean communal kitchen, so you could buy takeaway and dine in the sanctuary of the hotel, avoiding the crowds in the restaurants. The decor of the bedroom was pleasant, too.

A large hotel and restaurant situated in a great location - particularly handy if you are catching a ferry from Portsmouth. The room was warm, quiet, and clean with TV and tea and coffee making facilities. There is a cheap but decent restaurant attached, and the full English breakfast was excellent. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and there were CCTV cameras watching over the large attached car park.

Located literally just outside the Historic Dockyard and a 5-8 minute walk to the Harbour train station, Gosport ferry, the catamaran ferry and Gunwharf Quays. Staff were friendly and helpful and a decent breakfast selection in the morning. Hotel was also kept clean throughout. The swimming pool and jacuzzi was also a nice touch, after a day of traveling and exploring the dockyard.
