Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.

great city, nice medina it is more comfortable than the one in Marrakesh since there is no car and moto traffic, the beach is vast , clean. Fish market is amazing, must see. You can buy any fish there , get it cleaned and grilled. The are street markets in the center and very decent Carrefour supermarket with paper bags only. It is easy to park anywhere outside medina . The city is walkable , illuminated at night, it feels save to me to walk around. Just for roads crossing one should be careful - the drivers dont stop until pedestrian starts crossing. The city is clean enough compared to other cities we have seen ( like El Jadida or smaller cities in between).I like that plastic bottles are not seen in the streets - they are returned for some fees and thus collected.

Not as ‘hip’ as I’d expected but still worth visiting for the old town and souks. Nice walk along the beach and some good restaurants. Great horse ride along the beach but take care to book a reputable stable.

Essaouira is a relatively small, compact, ancient, traditional Moroccan city. Narrow alleyways and traditional architecture. Cafes, stalls etc. An interesting fishing boat filled harbour with animated action, fish gutting, cooking, selling etc. City walls and fortresses to explore. Friendly non hassling people. Much more relaxing than Marrakech, whilst still having exotic ambiance. Inumerable restaurants serving good food at reasonable prices. You can walk from one side of the city to the other in 15 minutes (if you don't lose yourself in the maze!) This was a former 'hippy' hangout and it is easy to understand why.

Lovely old medina and fishing port just a short walk along the promenade. If you explore the alleyways away from the shops you will come across workshops where the local products are being handcrafted.

What a wonderful city!
What a wonderful city! Beaming with actual local craft and art, lots of cute street cats and beautiful colourful houses with intricately decorated doors, windows and fountains. We fell in love with this small city and would love to go back.
Pro Tip if you like cats: buy some vet cat food and walk around the city with it because those creatures will break your heart with their cuteness.
I would recommend spending at least two days there. Get lost in the small streets to the sides from the main shopping areas. Visit the fish market, eat fresh oysters or other sea products. The beach was nice and serves as a great refreshment after long walks in Medina.
Shopping was great and cheap but I would still recommend learning the actual prices first. For example, we got small tiles for 10dhs but in other places we’re getting prices like 50 or 30. Don’t be afraid to walk away and negotiate a bit. Especially if it is not the master themselves selling but a reseller. You can usually find actual masters on the smaller side streets (especially for wood and fabrics). I also noticed that women have fair prices more often.
Food. Amazing street food and fruits! Don’t go to overpriced restaurants on tourist streets, unless they have a “menu” offer which can be worth the price. Otherwise, if you just take a detour from the main hustle, there will be tangine not for 80dhs but for 30. The food is also way cheaper outside of Medina.
Moroccan style of property (please note it's not a luxurious 5 star hotel, it's simple apartments with shared kitchen, but have a great charm and atmosphere, so if you want to enhance your stay by adding Moroccan flavours to it, this property is for you). Amazing view from roof top, and very helpful and looking after staff - Naziha was amazing, although she wasn't speaking English, we used translator and she was trying very hard to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. Shukran Naziha! 😍
The owner is such a nice guy, he was so helpful with everything, made our stay even better! He showed us amazing places to eat, even walking with us there, he gave us a bigger room after the first night, he offered to wash our clothes for free, he let us even checkout a little later cause we were surfing. All the staff is very helpful.
The hotel is beautiful and in a quiet area, the rooms are good, comfy, the price for the value is perfect :) I totally recommend this hotel in Essaouira
I loved the style and architecture of the hotel blending Moorish and Art Deco details as well as more contemporary features. The main restaurant and the U-shaped pool courtyard as well as the Thalasso pool really stood out by their understated elegance. The morning buffet was outstanding and we really liked having access to the relaxing spa pool for one hour. Service was impeccable. And finally the location across the beach promenade and a short walk to the médina is superb.
This hotel stands out as an excellent choice for those exploring Essaouira. Boasting comfortable and pristine accommodations, a welcoming staff, and its strategic location near both the medina and the beach, it strikes an ideal balance for visitors seeking the vibrant Medina experience alongside a peaceful environment for relaxation. As the Cultural Morocco Tours operator, we wholeheartedly endorse this establishment for a well-rounded and delightful stay.
Very friendly small hotel just inside the city walls. Great for exploring the back streets and close to restaurants and the beach. Also easy walk to Supratours bus station.
Rooms are small but comfortable. Shower was good - even on the top floor - and I had a view out over the street. Nice breakfast on the terrace or outside the room.
Colourful decoration and quirky characterful place. Friendly staff on 24/7. Fine for a couple of nights.
Beautiful Hotel, highly recommend it
It is one of the best place we stayed during our trip to Morocco. The hotel is really beautiful, The architecture and also the interior design of the rooms, the garden, the pool. It was very well designed and provide some sort of calmness in the oasis. The staff were very responsive, accomodating and polite. They helped us a lot
Highly recommeded this place to anyone wanting to stay in Essaouira.
Exquisitely beautiful hotel in a quiet neighborhood, ideal for those (like us) who like being a two minute walk from the far less crowded part of the beach. We simply loved our 20 minute walks north along the shore on the "boardwalk" to the ancient city center (Medina & Kasbah.) Breakfasts are great and Xavier even offered (without us asking) and made us breakfasts-to-go for our 5 a.m. departure on Day 3. Loved our pool time here.
Excellent price/quality ratio - it's not luxury accommodation but the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The staff was kind and always ready to help - it was a pleasure to chat with them when coming in the hotel, and they helped us organise a quad ride and our transportation to the airport. The riad is in the centre of the Medina, just off one of the main streets, and it feels safe to come back at night.
Lovely hotel with great, friendly staff. Located at the end of the beach, a really nice 15-20 minute walk along the promenade to the old town. Breakfast was tasty and very generous. Decoration on the interior of the hotel is stunning - really ornate in lots of places. Also beautiful garden which is a really nice, calm place for a cup of tea in the sun.
The hotel is very close to the beach and the medina . it is very clean, the rooms are very comfortable. the stuff is very welcoming and helpful they meet you with a smile and give you a professional service as well as advices and suggestions concerning activities you may enjoy.
when it comes to the restaurant, I am very satisfied with the food.
This hotel is not 5 star by European standards but it's still very nice. The staff are lovely and the private area on the beach and the pool are lovely. It's in a brilliant location within a very easy, flat walk to the Medina. Our room was big with lots of space and storage, a safe and minibar
Riad is right situated within the Medina, easy to find and close to old markets. It's location is the best part as it's close to fish market, old city Square, Beach and Fort. Riad is spectacular. My rooms was free upgraded. And fresh breakfast was served with lots of options.
The hotel is very nice, rooms are spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the pool on a day that was very windy at the beach. Xavier, his wife and the rest of the personnel are extremely kind and welcoming.
Breakfast was great too!
The hôtel in a very good place inside essaouira old medina, safe and with great vibe, it's getting renovated so there's a slight difference between the rooms some are fantastic 10/10 others are only 6/10
Location is nice.. not far from the Medina and the beach;
Personnel are professional and friendly, they gave me the opportunity to parking motorbike inside the hotel
Breakfast is good
Location best in Essaouira with unobstructed view of the sea from the terrace. Staff amazing could not be friendlier , breakfast best in Morocco, decor absolutely stunning.
