A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra is a great medium sized city with lots of things to do. It has all of the tourist attractions like Parliament, Museums, Art Galleries etc as well as some beautiful natural attractions and scenic drives only a short distance on the outskirts of the city. It has many great restaurants and shopping centres. There is good public transport.

Canberra is home to national treasures including the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Museum and the National Gallery. The central city area is based on Lake Burley-Griffen and provides very pleasant backdrop to significant monuments and buildings. We noted that since our last visit that night life in the central city area has improved greatly due to more community art displays and dining places.

Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
Canberra has a lot of places of interest to visitors.
I visited the Australian War Memorial, Museum of Australian Democracy, Portrait Gallery, Australian Archives, and National Gallery.
I used the public bus system to get around. Ensure that you check the bus timetable, as buses do not run very frequently.

Lots of things to see - Museum, art gallery etc, all close to each other. Some things are further afield and worth seeing, so a car is very useful/necessary. I discovered the buses don't take cash and I would have to apply for a travel card 7-10 days in advance to get it in the mail! They don't take credit cards either (apparently that is coming in November 2024, but not much use to me when my friends weren't able to give me a lift as planned!) I can't believe a city that wants visitors makes it IMPOSSIBLE to go anywhere by bus or light train!

Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Canberra is an easy getaway from Sydney.
Found enough to do for a couple of days and a good variety of restaurants and venues.
Very relax place to just explore and take a break away with some interesting places to see and visit for different reasons.
Also there are plenty of outdoor things to do, did go Mountain biking as the tracks are awesome.
Worth a visit, when you can
This property is great value for money given the service and accomodation it provides. This was my second time staying at this hotel and each time I have found the front desk customer service to be excellent. The bar at the top of the hotel is quite nice and has a great view. The hotel is also located in the nicest part of Canberra not far from Manuka and Kingston. Avoid staying in the ‘city’ (civic) as it’s bland, unappealing and only worth visiting for the shopping centre and a couple of bars.
Instructions provided made it extremely easy to navigate. As a young family with an infant, we were pleasantly surprised the unit was comfortable for three. Spacious shower area made it easy to fit a portable mini tub for an infant that we brought. Another bonus for us was the flat access allowing baby pram access right to the door. Not all apartments would offer towels, soap/shampoos so this was yet an other nice touch. Quiet. Would stay again when next in Canberra.
It's a pretty standard Best Western Hotel/Motel type of place - great for somewhere to sleep and refresh, but not a place that's particularly memorable. It served my purposes well, and was the cheapest property in Canberra for the night I needed a place to stay which is the main reason I booked. Location is suitable for those with their own transport and ideal if you're coming up from the south. Close to Manuka and the Parliamentary triangle too.
The location of the hotel is ideal. It is within walking distance of Canberra Centre and offers a variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from.
We had a two-bedroom suite, and the fact that the rooms offered king split beds to allow for four single beds is rare and was perfect for our sleeping arrangements.
The facilities were excellent. Very happy with our stay and would definitely book again.
The East Hotel was very close to the Kingston train station (where we came into Canberra). All of the friends I met with said it was a good location. The Italian Restaurant in the hotel was surprisingly good-- we had lunch there while waiting for our rooms to be ready (they could not accommodate early check in this day). They did accommodate our request for 2 twin beds.
Extremely welcoming and friendly service from all staff, nothing was a bother when asked Q. Very clean, comfortable beds and pillows that were probably the best we have come across in 4-5* hotels in years. This is great value for money. We would and have already recommended Deco Hotel and it would be our top pick if we visit Canberra in future.
The location of the hotel was excellent. Close to shops and transport.
The restaurant / dining area was so convenient. The meals and service were very satisfactory.
The room was quite spacious and housekeeping was excellent.
It was a very pleasant stay. I would happily come back for any future visits to Canberra.
I returned to this hotel for two reasons, 1. location - excellent area of Canberra, close to great eateries, lake and city and 2. the bed I had my first stay was soooo comfortable, but was a little let down as the bed the second visit wasn't the same quality. Still have no hesitations staying here in future.
The location of the property is excellent, opposite Manuka Oval, approx. 300 mts to shops, cafes, hotel & restaurants.
Staff were welcoming and friendly, and they could not do enough to make our stay more comfortable.
I would highly recommend the apartments to anyone visiting Canberra.
I think I got a good rate on this property. It was an efficient, comfortable and well equipped hotel and rooms in great location. Not sure I would pay the rack rate but will certainly book again if any deals. Height recommend.
The hotel was incredible. It is around 18 kms from Canberra's city centre but it's quite a small city so is easily navigable. The room was exceptional and we felt like royalty. The price was VERY reasonable too!
Comfortable, clean hotel in a good location (although, in Canberra you do have to drive to most main attractions). Friendly, helpful, efficient staff. Easy book in and check out. Excellent free in-house movies.
Great ambiance in the lounge/bar. Clean rooms. Tastefully decorated hotel in general. The free mini bar was an unexpected plus! Very close to the lake and a run/workout. Good breakfast and very friendly staff.
Location is great when visiting our Son in Canberra. Love the area as it has everything we need. Shopping centre close by and resteraunts close to hotel. Vikings club just next door also.
The room was big and comfortable, a lot of wear and tear in the bathroom, Breakfast was nice but same as you would get in a cheaper hotel. The best thing about the hotel was the staff.
Very welcoming staff, very modern and clean Hotel and perfectly placed. Crisp, clean sheets, most important. Complimentary drinks vouchers most appreciated.
