Regensburg’s cobbled streets, colourful façades and step gables constitute Germany’s best-preserved medieval centre. A 12th-century stone bridge crosses the Danube River between the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town and islands forming the Stadtamhof district.
Regensburg was an important trading centre and its wealthy merchants built tall towers, such as the Goldener Turm, to outdo each other. The dual spires of its Gothic cathedral tower over red roofs sheltering pavement cafes, traditional bierkellers and modern bars.
Niedermünster abbey also has square towers, while the Alte Kapelle’s most impressive feature is intricate gold interior detailing. Nearby Neupfarrplatz houses the annual Christmas markets, while the old town hall is on Kohlenmarkt. Just down the street a large David and Goliath mural adorns a house.
A plaque outside a more modest house marks Oskar Schindler’s former home. Much grander is Schloss Thurn and Taxis, an 8th-century monastery converted to a noble residence. At the eastern end of a park encircling the historic centre is a villa built for King Maximilian II of Bavaria, overlooking riverboats which cruise past a more outlandish royal creation – Donaustauf’s Walhalla monument, resembling a Greek temple.
Booking.com offers a great range of Regensburg accommodation including 4-star hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses near the train station.
We loved Regensburg. It is a beautiful, quite city with friendly people, great food, and reasonable amount of traffic. Our visit was very plesant. Nothing went wrong. Dining in the restaurant and shopping in the supermarket are both quite cheap.

I travelled to Regensburg every month for 15 years working and never tired of the city. We still visit every December to meet old friends and enjoy the Christmas ambience.
Plenty of traditional Bavarian restaurants - my favourites being Hacker Pschorr and Dicker Mann - but lots of modern places as well
A beautiful old city centre - exactly how you would envisage a traditional Bavarian city. Not to be missed

Regensburg is a wonderful medieval town.
Regensburg is a wonderful medieval town. The entire old town is easily walkable and there are so many ancient homes/buildings to see. Get a local guide so you don’t walk right past something incredible without realizing.

Beautiful old town, compact, easy to walk everywhere.
Beautiful old town, compact, easy to walk everywhere. Nice restaurants and cafes with great views. There are almost no cars in the old town and it makes it a good experience. The city has a very interesting history. Little shops with all kinds of things. Well worth a nice weekend.
Had very good dinner at Al Camino pizzeria+Peppers mexican- those two places make one restaurant on Haidplatz - and they have tasty tank beer!
We took a 45 min tour via the electric train (leaving every hour from the Domplatz at the cathedtral. The audio guide (in 6 languages) was informativre and fun.
The Eurostars Park Hotel Maximilian is a great hotel, good staff, good internet and great breakfast for a good price, while close to the train station it is very quiet, you hear no road or train traffic. I arrived early and they looked after my bags while I went into Regensburg. The sad thing is that someone put such a nice hotel in Regensburg. The hotel is only a short distance from the old town, it not a big area and you can walk the entire thing in several hours.
A very nice economical boutique hotel in the Altstadt near the train station and bus connections. Regensburg is a lovely preserved medieval town that escaped WWII bombing. The ancient Gothic cathedral is amazing. The old stone bridge over the Danube is great for people watching. Hotel staff was super and room was large and comfortable.
The location is excellent. The hotel is located a stone's throw from the train station, but already in the old town. The location is also nice for going out to eat or enjoy other entertainment. The room is clean, well designed, wonderful shower and bathroom in general
This place is the absolute definition of a "10" rating. The location is ideal, the apartment is super-comfortable with every amenity including original art throughout, and the value is outstanding. It's the best placed we stayed in Germany by far!
Good hotel for a car trip stopover or short city break. Location is great, easy to reach from the highway and only a 15 min. walk to the old town. Huge outdoor parking place, very good breakfast and super nice personnel.
The location was superb. In the middle of the old town, near many restaurants. The service was friendly and nice. The room was clean and tidy, the bed was comfortable. The hotel had a very nice old and cozy feel.
Regensburg is a student town so as 2 old people we were out of place. However, everyone was friendly and we enjoyed our 24 hours there. The hotel is well placed for exploring the old town.
Lavish presentation and ingredients at breakfast, facility is in a medieval bishops palace right in the center of oldest part of old town, staff was friendly and helpful.
Modern, comfortable hotel, it is one of the better ibis hotels I've stayed at. Staff were professional and helpful. Underground parking lot made travel easy.
Great location in the middle of old town, big and very nice furnished and equipped apartment, comfy bed and pillows. Very friendly and responsive host.
