The dinner we had was one of our best we had in three weeks Japan, if not the best. With the kids we liked to spend time with their goats. Simon was a wonderful host. He tried to help us have the best experience possible on our Kumano Kodo. Is also just a lovely human. The accommodation is in the most gorgeous place, because it was not in a central location. Simon works very hard to shuttle his guests to and from Tanabe and the trailhead. The house itself is beautiful and we enjoyed talking to him and learning about his small village of 70 people.

So I really didn't understand what I booked. 'Retreat' to me meant a communal space of travelers. I was also unsure if food would be provided. This was a point of anxiety for me because if there was no food at the end of a long hike and at the beginning of the next day's hike, we'd be miserable. I cannot convey to you the SHOCK and JOY to discover that we had booked an ENTIRE beautiful, modern home and that it was FULLY STOCKED with the best foods and drinks! There were two platters of vegetables, meat and seafood to grill. There was beer, sake and lots of snacks! There were so many more amenities that we didn't have time to use because of our hiking schedule: Fireplaces, Grill, wood-fired bath, etc. We felt well compensated for our money and appreciate both the quantity and quality of food. After our hike we were able to shower, do a load of laundry, grill up some food, and drink tea and snack, lounge in our yukata and listen to jazz. Thank you so much Sen.Retreat Takahara!

Check in and out was super easy. Very comfortable as we needed a place to stay as we walked the Kumano Kodo and it was difficult finding a place that was available so we were so grateful to have this option. Highly recommend for those wanting something simple and available.

We explored this small pleasant village, and took hikes into the forest, what magnificent nature! The host is truly welcoming, we received a home-made dinner and breakfast, and had a chance to chat with other travellers. The tatami mats were very comfortable and not too hard to sleep on like in other locations ;) Once again thank you for the pleasant stay. Wish we could stay longer!

Though the space is not that big, the set-up and decoration is quite smart. The room is clean and cozy to let me relax completely after exhausting hiking. And snacks and beverage provided in the room really help me a lot because it’s hard to buy food on the second day. In total, I like this place very much.

It’s clean, safe and comfortable. Ike is hospitable that he leads all customers to see the practice of celebration which is once a year. It’s so lucky to experience it! Simon was so helpful with information about the Kumano Kodo. He helped me figure out a new plan for my hike the next day to work around the weather. He picked me up from Tanabe and dropped me at the trailhead the next morning.
