Beautiful place but crowded all year round due to its popularity. Wonderful for people who are devotee of mother vaishnavdevi. Very well connected with train services. However be careful of the local beggers. They are a big nuisance in the town.

The long way up to the cave is not that easy but part of the the pelgrimage and memorable. I did start early in the morning at 6am. It was a very quiet and nice walk and no waiting line to enter the cave. When you start later it will be very busy on the road.
Registration office at main market to get your permit is open from 5 am to 10 pm. From there it is 2 km walk to the gate to start your pelgrimage. It is open 24 hours a day.
Up and down the mountain is about 24 km in total. There are lots of restaurants, toilets etc. On the way. You also can go on horse our stretcher with fixed prices.
As a foreigner i needed to show my passport but I was allowed to go.

Katra is a small town from where you start the Vaishno Devi...
Katra is a small town from where you start the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. There are a couple of temples nearby and it is a quiet location. One should always book a train for Katra station only if planning for Vaishno devi. The other two stations are very far from Katra. The main market is good. Hotels are cheap and you won't find many options for food as it's a vegetarian city and the cuisine options are limited.

The vegeterian city of Katra was a pleasent surprise .
The vegeterian city of Katra was a pleasent surprise . Being at the moutain base with all good & required facilities, in addittion to Taxi service to connect to Jammu etc ...it is a cool place to chill out for a few days. Autos shall be monitored for prices. They are too costly.
The Vasihnav dhaba and Hot milk and pakoras in the main market in the weather of 10 degrees was enjoyable . We enjoyed the CHole lulcha from a cycle wala vendor also.
The propoerty is located very close to the railway station and is easily accessible through autos and taxis. Even though the hotel is on the main road yet the property itself is recessed about 50 meters from road which provides a calm, noise free and tranquil environment - giving enough time for one to immerse himself in the spiritual aura of Mata Vaishno Devi. Not to forget it provides a bueautiful view of Mata Vaishno Devi from its large sized bay windows in the room.
Breakfast was not free. Good thing about the hotel :-
1.That the behaviour of hotel was polite and understanding.
2.As there is no airtel service available in KATRA only BSNL is available. So the guy in reception lend his phone so that we can contact our family.
3. The location of the hotel is on point . It only took half an hour from hotel to reach the trekking point ( Yatra starting point).
I suggest don't go for this hotel
There is no hotel by this name at jammu
It is completely fraud
At the time of booking they ask for payment Or tell you they will cancel your booking
After payment they will not attend any call Or will not reply on whatsApp too
Sohel kali charan contant no. 9070090408
They will ask for payment on no. End by 8501
There is one more number which is given in site
They are super fraud people... It doesn't matter that you have booked your room with prepayment ...when you reach there they will say 'booking.com is a fake website' don't book from there.
I advise all not to do online hotel booking in katra ... Because all katra people are scammers.
Prefer to do booking when you reach there.
Be alert from scammers ... Don't do prepayment

Best hotel to stay at Katra. Spacious suite with two bathrooms. Excellent dining & breakfast options. Very close to Katra helipad. Right in the market so safe & vibrant. Staff are exceptional and will go out of your way to make your stay comfortable. Beautiful garden space to spend your evening. Loved our stay here. Absolute value for money.
Room is good. Complete with all the facilities.
The main market is nearby. And Banganga is walkable - we walked while going for darshan.
All good restaurants are within walking distance.
Hotel tea is kadak. Something we found only here in Katra
this hotel doesnt have any facilities.. staffs are rude and uneducated.. despite booking amount paud they do not booking information and denied check in.. the manager and owner did not bother to take the calls from oyo or booking .com
