There is so much to like about this property. Traveling in May we had a number of options to consider in Russell, and as we were looking for somewhere quiet and tucked away yet close to Russell itself, Kokomo Retreat ticked all our boxes. The apartment itself is spacious, with a large living area, plenty of comfortable seating and a great outlook. The hosts were unobtrusive but readily available and the wider area is an absolute treat with quiet beaches, grassy areas and easy access to walking paths. Highly recommended!
Featuring garden views, The Sails features accommodation with patio, around 1.5 km from Tapeka Point Beach. There is a private entrance at the apartment for the convenience of those who stay.
Set in Russell, 2.9 km from Christ church and 3 km from Russell Museum, Pukeko Nest offers a garden and air conditioning. This bed and breakfast is 3.9 km from Flagstaff Hill.

We were welcomed by the lovely Catherine.
Showed to our apartment, what a stunning view and amazing sunsets!.. A very well set out apartment. A few special touches like white robes to wear, hot tub with a view and little chocolates in the fridge for each of us. Our hosts could not have done more for us, even bringing in our washing one day when it started to rain...if We get back to Russell one day, we will definitely look up Bellrock....thanx Cathrine and Stuart.

Russell is heavenly.
Russell is heavenly. It is so beautiful and we had the best time.
What a gem this part of the world has access to! The oysters were amazing. The food/experience and service at the Duke of Marlborough was first rate. The sunsets were surreal. The visit to Urupakapuka by ferry led to an amazing day of exercise and adventure, we had a heavenly swim in one of the islands isolated beaches by ourselves.
What a day!🥰

If you are around Bay of islands I suggest to not stay at Paihai and go to Russell. Smaller, quieter and much nicer. There is a ferry across to Paihai if you want to go there.
Long Beach is not to be missed and we enjoyed the Flagstaff walk too.

Russell was so cool. Easy to get around and so lovely in Winter as very few people. The history is interesting and the people were mostly friendly.

It is a beautiful location and peaceful.
It is a beautiful location and peaceful. There are enough cafe's / restaurants for 4 or 5 days but plenty more in nearby resorts. The one thing you need to realise about NZ is that "eateries" general cafe's and take aways open early 6 or 7 am but close early too, 3 or 4pm. In general the stop serving an hour before. A lot of restaurants open 12 to 3pm and 5 to 8pm. If you want to eat late you need to check on line for places. Very few apart from Asian places take orders after 9pm.
Good supermarket. Lovely sea and beaches around. Public loos are quite prolific in NZ including beaches with changing rooms. The whole country top to bottom is wort a visit. Low traffic levels apart from cities. Lot of mountain roads.
Had a great stay here and recommend it. Our room was spacious with a well-equipped kitchen with full fridge, comfy bed, and sofa. Plenty of room to spread out. There is wonderful espresso across the street at “Hell Hole”. The hotel is 1.5 blocks from the waterfront and ferry. It was a pleasant little walk to go for a swim. Lots of restaurants within one block. Recommend Hone’s Garden for incredible pizza. Russell is a delightful place and this hotel was spot on for our stay,
We usually use a different hotel when in Russell, however this year due to lack of availability we used The Commodores Lodge for the first time.
The Commodores Lodge is very central in Russell with bars and restaurants nearby.
We were very impressed with the room and the facilities, the room was very clean with good facilities.
Rowena was very helpful and went out of her way to help us. The pool in the courtyard looked very inviting, though we didn't use it.
An absolutely beautiful historic building with stunning views over the bay. We had an amazing 2 bed suite with small lounge and terrace, the place was spotless. Greg and Peter were perfect hosts, so happy to help with any question and was so lovely to hear the history of the house and area. Tea, coffee, homemade biscuits available and honesty bar. Peter makes amazing breakfasts! Russell town is so pretty too, particularly out of high season.
Great location, quiet, comfortable and charmingly historic, plus incredible views over the water. The breakfasts were a fortifying and delectable gift each morning and served on the veranda with amazing views. Very accessible to the wonderful amenities of Russell and the owners provided useful local suggestions which were always spot on. One of the highlights of our trip.
We booked two rooms in this lovely quiet area. The studios are very spacious, clean and comfortable and contain a kitchenette. Both rooms had a private balcony and beautiful views over Russell and the bay. The lodge is just a short walk to the waterfront and restaurants.
Owner Catherine was very pleasant and helpful.
Fantastic stay! The room is Comfortable in every way. The bed was among the best we've had in 115 days of travel. The view is such a treat. And the town of Russell is exceptional. We were sorry to only have one night. Would have preferred to stay longer rather than be passing through.
I felt like I had arrived home - I have always had an affinity with the Bay of Islands n Russell n discovered I had spent time in this very site as a youngster. it was surreal n even more enjoyable and I just loved the vibe the view the host - the comfort! wow we are coming back!
Right in town close to cafe's and restaurants and the jetty. Our family stayed in one of the waterfront apartments that had stunning views over the bay. The staff were extremely helpful and the apartments couldn't have been better set up with every comfort of home.
Gorgeous wee place in a terrific location. Short walk into Russell, restaurants and to the Paihia Ferry. Lovely outside area in which to relax and admire the view. Everything you could want was in the cottage. The Hosts were just lovely. Best place yet!
Great stay at Motel Russell. Perfect spot for a young family (three preschoolers). Kids loved the pool, and being able to bike/walk into town. Would definitely stay again. Owner was lovely and we really appreciated a free upgrade to a larger room.
We loved the stunning view of Russell, and all the way over to Paihia from our deck. Could even be viewed from the very comfy bed.
Exceptionally clean bathroom and kitchen facilities and just the right amount of decor without the clutter.
John was a friendly and helpful host. The view over Russell was magic, and we enjoyed swimming at the nearby beaches. Hangi and concert at the Treaty grounds were excellent, as was a day sailing the islands..
We stayed 2 nights and had a beautiful spacious room on the corner with balcony. I love the old world feel of this hotel with so much charm and character but with all modern conveniences and comfort.
The pool location was good, location of the motel was excellent, close to all the amenities. Very nice hosts, there were very helpful. The room was very clean and well spacious for our requirements.
Absolutely loved staying a Villa Russell. Beautiful views and perfect location. Clean, comfortable and inviting. I loved the dressing gowns.
The yummy breakfast was a great end to our stay.
We only stopped in for a night, but our room was nice and warm when we arrived. Facilities seemed well looked. Will definitely be back next time we are in Russell!
