The ryokan features family rooms. The breakfast and dinner is traditional Japanese and is excellent and value for money. The dinner was especially sumptuous and was more than expected. It had a small onsen and for the more adventurous you can also use on of the 3 public onsen that was only steps away from the front door. It's exceptionally close to the ski lift - easily walkable even with gear.

Matsushima
Featuring free property-wide WiFi, a spa centre and a seasonal outdoor pool, Matsushima Ichinobo offers accommodation in Matsushima. The ryokan has a hot spring bath and sauna, and guests can enjoy a drink at the bar. Free private parking is available on site. The room (I had the basic level option) was gigantic for Japan, with a huge picture window and a view to die for. To say I was blown away upon arrival would be an understatement. The hotel is spacious and uncrowded. I suspect it caters almost exclusively to the Japanese market so some instructions were on rather informal notes, or simply only in Japanese. The rate is breakfast and dinner included but also includes unlimited alcohol from 7pm and coffee/tea/refreshments all day with an icecream bar in the late morning and afternoon. The silence and sleep quality was superb as was the bathroom with shower.

Zao Onsen
Located within a 10-minute walking distance from the Zao Sky Cable aerial lift, Miyamaso Takamiya features 9 natural hot spring baths for guests to enjoy. The wooden structure of the property portrays a traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. Our stay at Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso was one of our highlights of our honeymoon! The hotel is insanely charming and very well kept. You can see it's an old building but it doesn't look old or worn down. The staff are friendly and polite, and greet you by the door when you arrive and leave the hotel. They were also very accomodating to us when we asked to keep out futons out, as we wanted to take a nap during the day. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and a lovely experience, it was delicious and presented nicely and staff was attentive and friendly. Our suite was amazing, and we loved having our own private bath outside on a balcony overlooking a snowy hill.

We stayed in the annex, in a room overlooking the Aga River. It was incredibly beautiful to see that view every day. The room was well-equipped, with comfortable futon, yukata, bathroom, fridge and onsen amenities. The large public bath and rotenburo in the main hotel were excellent.
The ryokan is really traditionnal and super cool to sleep and have lunch in. The classic tatami rooms and onsens are a must ! It's a delight after a quite hike in the park to chill around in the facilities. There's even an onsen on the roof that we did not try because we checked in too late so we didn't get the info haha Great surprise was also the adaptability to vegan travelers : they made us a fully vegan breakfast that was super good and filling so thanks for that !
Traditional style accommodation, gives you the chance to sleep in a futon on the tatami, wear a yukata, and utilise shared bathroom facility, or sento. It is worth the experience 😊 it's reasonably close to Hiraizumi station (about 10 minutes walk) and the host very kindly tried to accomodate for my vegan requirements for breakfast. Bathroom and toilets were clean.
Location is great. Onsen is spacious. Outdoor onsen is good. Restaurant serves reasonably priced food. Nice Japanese style room with futons and yukata.
The hotel was really great for the price. Everything is traditional Japanese; tatami everywhere and you take your shoes off right at the entrance rather than walking to your room with them. Onsen is not tattoo-friendly so I did not use, but I went to Yamagata one day to use the hot spring there instead. Breakfast was terrific, with many small plates to try lots of the food of Sendai. The staff was extremely helpful, and gave me suggestions for where to eat harakomeshi.
The woman who runs the inn is a sweetheart! I arrived in the traditional tatami-mat and futon room which was a great experience already and there were a yukata, chocolates and a thermos of hot water and green tea packets awaiting me (which were refilled everyday, as they cleaned the room!)
The location was excellent - very close to Aomori station and the Nebuta Museum! The staff was also very helpful when explaining things to me. As well, the room had a very Japanese style, and the yukata provided was very cute! Finally, the futon bed on the tatami was much softer than other futons that I have slept on during my trips in Japan, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Yoshidaya Ryokan is a beautifully presented traditional ryokan. Its right in the middle of the old part of Zao Onsen surrounded by historic buildings. This is a traditional Ryokan so be prepared to walk up stairs and use shared facilities. The rooms are very warm and comfortable and the Ryokan facilities are well presented and clean. The Hot Spring bath was wonderful! I will be staying at Yoshidaya again!
