At 3 km (9600 ft) Elevation, the night was chilly and the morning was fresh. Given our experience with bland and low-variety Costa Rican cooking, Miriam's home cooking was outstanding. This was a beautiful magical place. The best place to see Quetzal is near an avacado tree right on this property. The cabin is right on the river, walking distance to two restaurants with beautiful patios. The drive from Quetzales national park entrance is lots of switchbacks and you must be very careful. Look for the “unicorn lodge” sign on your left coming down the mountain in San Gerardo. “Casa monge” itself isn’t well signed from the main road. I would recommend this place to anyone, it was fantastic! Dirche, the owner, was absolutely lovey and took us out at 5:30 to see the quetzals. I would also recommend the waterfall hike about 2kms down the hill from Casa Monge- a bit treacherous at times but well worth it, 2-3 hrs total!

Wunderschön in den Bergen gelegen. Kamin für kalte Tage vorhanden. Essen war sehr gut. Kurzfristig wurde eine Vogelbeobachtungstour für uns organisiert und wir haben den Quetzal gesehen!

Such a unique place to stay with beautiful surroundings. The cabin was so cosy with a heater and the beds have plenty of covers to keep you warm. It also has a heater, plus a fridge which we found useful. When we arrived we found the cafe very easily and then we were shown down to the cabin. The hosts also helped booking us onto a quetzal watching tour the next morning with an incredible guide, and we got to see both male and female quetzals - what an experience. The food at the cafe including the free breakfast was great, and it was great to go onto the viewing platform to see all the different types of beautiful birds. The other good thing about Miriam's is that it isn't too far down the mountain road, as we only had a small car. We enjoyed this more basic style accommodation as you felt close to nature. Outside the front of our cabin was a little table and chairs and we just sat there when we arrived and listened to the birds. Would definitely recommend.

What a value for the little money spent! There is cable and satellite TV, although most programs are in Spanish. It has a hot shower which is an exception rather than the rule in a normal home here. Although it is cooler in the mountains, it was cozy sleeping in our multi-blanketed beds. We enjoyed dinner at this property and ate the local trout, as it is the freshest fish available in these pristine mountain locations. Very yummy! The cold, clear mountain water is delicious.... no chemicals here! We filled all our water bottles to take with us. We did not eat breakfast at the restaurant as we had a full kitchen. However, we did make use of the provided tea and coffee, which was locally produced and was so delicious that we purchased several bags to take home with us.

Great location and mountain view. One road takes you down to the river and other restaurant. Nice terrace with lots of varieties of birds. Country like atmosphere.

We loved the scenic view, the cool night air with twinkling stars, the shower with a view, the nice hammock chair, waterfall trail, flowers, birds and restaurant that served the best trout dinner we have ever had! The shower has hot water, which is a rarity in Costa Rica. William was also very helpful with tour information. We want to go back and swim under the waterfalls!
