Sovereign Resort Hotel, hotel in Cooktown

This 4-star resort in the centre of Cooktown is set in extensive tropical gardens and boasts a lagoon-style swimming pool. It offers rooms with balconies and outdoor furniture.

Breakfast menu was good, eggs many different ways. Baked coral fish and a cereal dish with yoghurt and fresh fruit. Location was right in the middle of town. No noise, very comfortable, private rooms side by side with our adult daughter. Great pool.

Riva-La-Vista-Cooktown, hotel in Cooktown

Riva-La-Vista-Cooktown provides rooms in Cooktown. The property features mountain and river views, and is 2.3 km from Finch Bay Beach.

The facilities are five star our host most gracious and the views are astonishingly beautiful. We got the views advertised in the listing and could not be happier such an amazing part of the world with the Endeavour river flowing out towards the Coral sea. The rooms, bedding and other amenities are perfectly clean. The fridge was full sized and kept everything cold and frozen as required. The WiFi signal was powerful and always available. There is plenty to see and do the local council has done a great job of putting putting up information plaques all over the place detailing the rich heritage. We also loved the souvenir shop in town picket up some nice mementos.

The museum is closed Mon-Tue. We went on Wednesday. Fairly small. The town is small with some beautiful views. Grassy Hill has very nice 260 degree view. The botanic gardens are lovely. Finch beach was unexpectedly pretty. The Mulligan Highway from Cairns is in superb shape.

Cooktown was not what I expected, it was far better than I was expecting. The town is very clean and tidy, great amenities and services. October just starting to a bit humid. Winter would be a better time to visit.

Lots of history on Capt Cook. Beautiful new river Prescinct with interesting signage of history in the area. Historical museum and cemetery worth a visit . The railway shop has lots of local handicrafts for sale . Good Cornett IGA on Helen St ( back street , not on Charlotte St ) Lots of bottle shops and options for eating out including bowls club, Pubs and Thai restaurant. Takeaway vans selling lunch food and coffee shops near the water . Easy to walk around . Bus trip from Cairns Trans North goes to Cooktown and return daily . Cooktown is a a layback quiet town which has become more popular with tourists over the 20 years we have visited. It it a Southerners Haven May to October. If you are into Fishing the Charters out of Cooktown are among the best in Australia! If not, then it is simply a restful no pressure town with very friendly locals who are only so pleased that you have come to visit their little paradise!

It's a long drive from Cairns on a very good road (allow 4 hours), and there's not a great deal to do once you get there. There's a nice river-front walk, fishing jetties, playground for the kids, and a new water-park towards the end of the bay. Some nice pubs and restaurants to choose from, (Cooktown is noted for its seafood), and the usual souvenir shops. The museum is interesting but quite expensive at $25 per adult admission; worth it if you want to see the anchor from Capt. Cook's Endeavour and how it was retrieved. The sunset cruise on the Endeavour river is worth doing; byo drinks, but glasses, ice and a nice cheese platter is included, and Nick's commentary is worth the price of the cruise in itself. The Grassy Hill lookout is quite spectacular but you'll need to hold on to your hat as it gets very blustery up there, and the Botanic Gardens near Finch Bay are also worth a visit. If you're based in Cairns and just want to see Cooktown to tick it off your "been there, done that" list, I'd suggest heading north towards Port Douglas then veer off to Mount Molloy is a better way than the usual recommended route via Mareeba. Don't even try going via the Bloomfield Track through the Daintree unless you have a big 4WD.

What I like about Cooktown is the laid back atmosphere of the place and all locals are friendly and willing to help you. The food is good in the pubs or clubs and served in a timely manner. The view from the lookout is great and it's a nice stroll around the botanic gardens. It's a great place to getaway and do very little but mix with the locals. Recommend for weekend trip.

Good location above the town, with everything you could possibly need for a short or extended stay for friends or families. Breakfast provisions - including a loaf of fresh baked bread - in the fridge along with all the basics. Bathroom products provided. Very clean with air conditioning in both bedrooms as well as the living area. Full laundry with washing products supplied. Nice outdoor decked area with a table and chairs. Hostess who offered advice on where to go and what to do, with a message through our stay checking that all was well.

Beautifully painted and decorated room in a little villa in the garden opposite the pool. Good bed linen and towels and very nice modern bathroom with lovely products. The room is very light and has a small verandah. Lovely hosts Di and Andrew greeted us with their beautiful dog Kaly. They were excellent at recommending what to see and where to eat in Cooktown. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay both at the Gecko and in Cooktown. We wished we had booked for two nights as there is some much to enjoy there.

Although the resort was 15Km out of Cooktown, one would need a vehicle to visit Cooktown anyway. The surroundings were exceptional and we were greeted with coffee and cake on arrival. On one night we took the availability of dinner at the resort. It was nice to be with the hosts Sue and Tony to hear about local events in Cooktown.
