Had wanted to visit Matera for many years and it lived up to our expectations. Beautiful historic city and easy to walk around. We had a couple of good meals , one terrible and fine dining experience a massive let down. This can happen in any city just your luck sometimes you can be unlucky.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia.
The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.

Matera it's a southern Italian wonder.
Matera it's a southern Italian wonder. Is famous for its sassi and stunning landscapes, a city so expressive and touching is its sorrowful beauty.
Matera is the Italy's magical city of stone. Archaeologically the most interesting town in Italy.
Matera continues its rebirth attracting worldwide attention for its history, culture, and extraordinary architecture and terrain.
Hiking, gastronomy, art and culture, photography, painting, history... all of this took us to Matera and all of this fascinated us, to the point of wanting to return one day.
We stayed in Matera just one night, in 2 couples and the idea was to sleep in a cave! I booked it because it was well rated! The hotel is obviously in the restricted part of the city (in the Sassi) and therefore you have to park about 300 m away and walk with your bags! That's ok, it's part of this very central type of hosting! One of the rooms was really a cave, well renovated, in good taste! The other room was not a cave, but it was spacious, with a dining table and sofa! Mr Francesco very attentive!
perfectly located in the old part of Matera.
Staff was very friendly and responsive as we checked by message for parking solution.
We parked just 300 m away from the hotel in a secured car park where we left our bikes at the car.
The room in a cave was perfect for us to cool down and relax before we went out to explore in the later afternoon.
We arrived in August so it was super hot during the day.
Breakfast also very good, dog friendly, wifi worked well.
We hope to be able to come back.
The apartment is as you see in the photos, everything clean and very comfortable beds. Good breakfast is provided; varied juices, milk, coffee, fresh fruit, toasts and yogurts, much better than most hotels in Italy. The location is top as you are right in the centre. And the host goes far and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, from explaining a bit of history about Matera to providing a complementary bottle of wine. 100% recommend to stay here.
OMG!!!! We didn’t want to leave. Everything was perfect. The modern design, technology, kitchen utilities, and ambiance were stupendous. I wouldn’t change anything. I’ll be back for sure… and often.
Perfect location.
Eustachio and Benedetta greeted and cared for us like we were family. (He even parallel parked our large rental SUV in a small spot.) They could teach hospitality to the best 5 star luxury hoteliers. It comes natural to them.
Small hotel, practically situated on the fringe of Sassi Caveoso and therefore easy to park the car. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast is served on a nicely situated terrace with stunning view of the town. Great for aperitif in the evening. For dinner, I heartily recommend Soul Kitchen, exceptional Ribeye (Podolica) and Pannacotta with orange infused olive oil. Make sure you take a guided walking tour to really get to know Matera.
This is a true boutique hotel with outstanding service. All staff are very professional, attentive, eager to make guests happy. Rooms are very well decorated, good size, modern, comfortable. The gardens and free parking lot are beautiful. Excellent breakfast.
Staff were very helpful pointing the best places to visit in Matera, since the quaint town has so much to see and visit.
The resort is beautiful, it is a boutique hotel located in the heart of Matera, right by the Duomo.
Enza, the property owner is super personable and hands on with any inquiries we have.
Vito, the manager is super friendly and provide excellent hospitality service.
Bonus point is their staff will come meet you at the square and carry your luggage directly to the entrance.
Booked a junior suite cave room in this minimalist and stylish cave hotel. Stylishly decorated with thoughtful fixtures and fittings and great sunken bath! Great location in sassi Caveoso for discovering Matera. Their own underground cisterns and caves were incredible. Great breakfast available and worth having to set you up for the day. Staff informative and helpful.
The hotel is new and every detail screams luxury. They gave us a free upgrade for the room, because it was my wife’s birthday. Also they left a prosecco with 2 glaces in the room. The room is spacious and the bed is extremely confortable. The spa area is nice and included in the room rate. The best hotel in Matera. Only 10 min walk from Sissi.
This hotel is like nowhere I've ever stayed before. It truly gave you the experience of Matera! Our upgraded room had wonderful views of the city. Breakfast was exceptional with the opportunity to sit on the veranda and overlook the city with a morning cappuccino. The suite we ended up in had a roof-top terrace and sweeping views of Matera.
Lovely location, 3 min walk to the main Sassi area and terrace overlooking the town.
For the price - this is the best you can get in Matera with only better option being staying in a cave hotel (and paying LOTS) for it.
Great comfy bed, large room and bathroom, lovely views.
Everything you need and more. Very impressed!
All staff, without exception, are dedicated to your satisfaction. They seemed to be absolutely sincere in this.
Modern and very clean hotel has attractive interiors and close-up views of ancient Matera.
Community patio is a great bonus.
Very good breakfast (included) is made by friendly, happy people.
Very nice Sassi room hotel. Helpful staff arranged tour and dinners. Room was good, and as expected. A cave. Comfortable beds. Excellent breakfast included. Location is perfect and there is an excellent artisan gallery only a few doors away. Via Corso is nearby for evening strolls and Matera is Magical.
The Locanda Di San Martino Hotel is very well located for exploring the wonders of Matera. The thermal baths are unique. Breakfast was very good with a wide selection of fruit, yoghurt, bread, meat, cheese, cakes and pastries. Our cave room was spacious and comfortable.
The service was very very good including recomendations for english guided tours, restaurants for lunch and dinner.
The hotel was right in rhe middle of the old town so it felt really authentic and a Must to stay a night when visiting Matera
Location! Cave-like rooms at the end of the gorge where Matera is perched. Outdoor terrace with incredible views you can enjoy at breakfast or at sunset with a drink. Hotel front desk staffers were very friendly and helpful.
Very interestingly designed hotel scattered amongst different former "caves".
We had a standard room which was rather small
Small spa area and very limited access
Good breakfast
Very, very helpful staff
I can’t recommend this hotel enough, it’s brand new and our room was beyond perfect.
This hotel will be one of the best places in Matera I’m before the end of the year.
The croissant and coffe for breakfast is at a cafe next to the hotel and was good.
Really friendly staff. They explain what should we visit in Matera and give us a map.
