高野山 宿坊 西禅院 -Koyasan Shukubo Saizenin-, hotel in Koyasan

Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples.

The temple is beautiful! The grounds are amazing, the common areas are also wonderful. The rooms are very spacious, having both a "living" area and a "sleeping" area. Note that for the rooms with the shared bathroom there is a curfew for when the shower/bath can be used (4pm-9pm). The morning prayer was also a nice extra to participate in.

The train and cable car were thrilling.

The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

    This temple is very remote.

This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history. We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.

My stay at this hotel in Koyasan, managed by monks, was an unforgettable experience. The monks' hospitality and guidance throughout our stay were exceptional. The private dining in a traditional Japanese setting was exquisite, and the onsen was a relaxing highlight. Participating in the morning prayer provided a unique spiritual connection. The monks' parting gift added a personal touch to our departure. If you seek a remarkable and culturally rich stay in Koyasan, I highly recommend this hotel.

If you’re like me and dream of visiting Koyasan but have to travel on a budget, this is the place for you! The owner is so kind and generous with his advice about enjoying your time exploring this incredible, historic temple town and he even makes great food, too! I highly recommend staying there. It’s also awesome how close it is to the Okunoin Cemetery, which was my favorite part of Koyasan, and also makes attending the morning prayer service much easier because of its close proximity!

We are so happy we chose this temple for our stay in Koyasan. It was quiet and peaceful and the staff was very kind. The morning ceremonies were definitely an important part of the experience. The place felt much less crowded compared to the other temple stays that we passed by in town, which we really appreciated. It has a nice garden and a relaxing indoor onsen, available for guests in the evenings.

The host was incredibly kind and helpful, especially when it came to helping me transport my luggage. Loved the little granola packets for breakfast. Guesthouse is modern, clean, and comfortable. The location is good, very close to Family Mart and late-night restaurants which is convenient, especially since many places around Koyasan close around 6:00 PM!

Even nicer than the photos look. The building looks newly refurbished and my room was clean, comfy and modern. The owners were super friendly and made me feel very welcome, including excellent food and service on their izakaya downstairs. The location is great for sightseeing in Koyasan, only 10 min walk from major temples.

Well, as we knew very well, Sakishoin is not a typical hotel, it is a monastery playing hotel, or a hotel playing monastery, whichever you prefer. The room was large and contained a bathroom and toilet. Everything is clean, no complaints. The location is just great, very close to the old cemetery and mausoleum.

Koyasan is an experience that you should not miss. This temple is in a good location, close to a bus stop, but you can also walk to the cemetery. The morning ceremonies were an awesome experience, and the food was great! Room was as expected, very traditional and very very cold at night.

The temple and room was absolutely beautiful. Staying at Rengejoin was the hilight of my trip to Japan. I 100% recomend you get the dinner/breakfast package and attend the afternoon meditation and Buddhist ceremony in the morning. Defenetly go to both, as they are each very different.

An amazing experience. It was extremely tranquil and having the chance to stay in such a historic temple was incredibly peaceful. It was a cold day in Koyasan, but each room is outfitted with a small heater. Being able to experience the morning prayers was such an honor.

While outwardly simple ‘pilgrim lodgings’ it’s hard to tell Eko-in from a top notch ryokan or hotel. The rooms are superb, the location glorious, the food wonderful and the service exemplary. On top of this you have the lovely spiritual element.
